It is the World's Biggest Cliche. To have that song that grabs you and will always define it... it will always exist for those that are members of the human race. For me, that song it is "A Horse with no Name" by America.
In the realm of pop songs, it is pretty long: over 4 minutes. For most of us, it is beyond out own attention spans. It has a melody we can all hum along with, easily adoptable to muzac- all os the things we require of our music here in the U.S.
By no means am I saying that his is THE perfect song, all I can say is that it was a very large part of my life soundtrack. Other times, I would have said that it was a different song. In my teens, it changes more often than any other portion of my life.
I still catch it though. Rarer than it once was. I hear lyric or music, or both, that suck the breath from my body and remember why I am sitting at that redlight.
Recently, I have found Neko Case to possess that voice. I am not more particularly heart broken or bitter than any other time. But I hear the perfection coupled with the emotion in her voice and find myself waiting for the next note.
I hope that music will always exist for all of us. I hope that each take a breath into 3/4 time. I hope that each of us are willing to raise our voice willing to defend our choices.
